Sewage Backup Cleanup

A sewer line break or leak is a serious problem that requires immediate attention. The bacteria and other biohazards present in sewage and sewer water can pose a health threat to you and your family and cause illness and other health concerns if not promptly and properly cleaned and treated.

If you’ve experienced a sewage backup or leak, do not attempt to clean the mess yourself. Beyond the obvious signs of damage from visible sewage or standing sewer water, the mess can leak and seep into floors and rugs, behind walls, or into ceilings or other hidden areas. And, if the entire affected area is not cleaned, dried, and sanitized, what started as a sewage backup or leak can become even worse if mold infestation occurs.

For the health and safety of everyone in your home, call a professional sewer line remediation company right away, as they have the training, equipment, and expertise to properly and thoroughly mitigate the problem and restore your home to its clean, sanitary condition.

American Fire & Water Restoration is the sewage backup cleanup company you need. We are a professional water damage restoration company and we provide homeowners peace of mind when they need it most. Our service area includes Lake, McHenry, and north Cook Counties in Illinois and southern Kenosha County in Wisconsin, and we are available around the clock, 365 days a year, to take your emergency call.

Signs of A Sewer Line Problem

If you notice any of the following symptoms either inside or outside your home, chances are you have a sewage or sewer line problem and you should call for immediate help:

  • You smell raw sewage in a drain that leads to the sewer line
  • Sewer water backs up in toilets or sinks
  • Sinks and tubs are slow to drain
  • You hear a gurgling sound in one or more drain
  • A sink or toilet does not drain and instead overflows
  • You see signs of water damage on the exterior of your home, specifically on the foundation
  • Water has accumulated in the area of your yard where the underground septic system is located

At American Fire & Water Restoration, we understand both how unpleasant and unsafe a sewer line blockage and the resulting leaks and overflows can be. You can trust us to properly remediate and clean even the worst sewage problems. Our technicians are fully trained and certified by IICRC—the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration Certification—the organization that sets the standards for the inspection, cleaning, and restoration industries. We handle all types of sewer and drain problems, including those caused by:

  • Solid items such as a diaper or cat litter that were flushed and now block the sewer line
  • Overflowing of public sewer lines onto your property due to heavy rains
  • A crack or collapse of your sewer line, for example, from tree roots growing inside the line
  • A buildup in pipes and drains of grease, hair, etc.
  • A break or blockage in your city’s main sanitation line

Because a sewage backup and leak can occur at any point in the line, our first step is to always secure the area for everyone’s health and safety, then inspect the sewer line to determine the cause of the backup. If, after our initial inspection, we were unable to locate the problem, we next use a drain snake with a video camera attached to it to go deep into the line or drain till we find the reason for the backup.

If the source of the problem is in the line or sewer system outside the home, we consider the age and condition of the sewer line when deciding the best course of action to take. In some cases, we can simply bore through the line to clear and flush out the blockage. If the sewer line or pipe is cracked or damaged, we will replace the section of the line that is damaged. If the sewer line is old and failing, we will either remove and replace it entirely or pull a new sewer pipe through the old pipe without fully digging up and removing the old line.

If the sewage backup or leak has occurred inside the home, we take the following steps:

  1. If sewage and/or contaminated water are present in the area, we remove these directly our truck to eliminate the chance of further contamination.
  2. We remove and properly dispose of any items or personal belongings that have absorbed sewer water, as these are now contaminated and considered to be a biohazard risk.
  3. We use safe, approved cleaning products and solutions to clean every surface and every area that was touched by the sewer water. This step includes disinfecting and deodorizing the area so it is restored to a clean, sanitary condition.
  4. Our professional-grade drying and dehumidifying equipment is placed appropriately to thoroughly dry the area and eliminate any chance for a mold infestation to occur.
  5. We repair, renovate, or reconstruct any part of your home that was damaged or destroyed in the process.

American Fire & Water Restoration is available 24/7 and we arrive onsite in 90 minutes or less after receiving your initial call.
